About the Department
The Library Science Curriculum of MSU started when the curriculum leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Education, major in Library Science (BSLS), was offered in the College of Education in 1976. It had the end view of providing professional training to school librarians, both elementary and high school, in the area.
In 1978, there was an urgent need to expand the curriculum leading to the degree of Bachelor of Library Science (BLS) whose primary purpose was geared towards preparing library professionals in all types of libraries in all aspects of the profession. This development was coupled with the creation of the Department of Library Science under the then College of Arts and Sciences. It envisioned itself as one responsible for a genuine Library Education and Training in the region. To ensure a better operation of the program, Dr. Marianita M. Dablio was designated as the Officer-in- Charge of the department through Special Order No. 22-R, Series of 1978 on December 14, 1978.
From that time on, there were various changes in the curriculum leading to the degree of BLS and BSLS as embodied in the MSU Board of Regents Resolution No. 795, Series of 1988 during the 33rd meeting of the University’s Board of Regents held at the PNC Conference Room in Manila on May 12, 1988.
In 1997, the BLS curriculum was revised to keep abreast with the changes in the Librarianship Profession, incorporating Information and Communication Technology courses. The program was changed to Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS) and the program BSLS was no longer offered. Since then, the department is renamed as Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS) and remains as one of the departments of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities.
To date, the department has totally expanded its scope and nature to better respond to R.A. 9246, The Philippine Librarianship Act of 2003, the law that regulates the practice of librarianship, and CHED Memorandum 24, series of 2015, Revised Policies, Standards and Guidelines for the Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS) program.
