Marawi City – The Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM), under the Office of the President at Mindanao State University (MSU) Marawi City, recently sponsored a significant event aimed at fostering peace and enhancing Islamic education. The Grand Summit for Peace and Islamic Education for Arabic Schools and Institutes of the Municipality of Tugaya took place on February 24, 2025, at the IPDM, MSU Marawi City. The event was held in partnership with the Tugaya Unified Movement for Movement Inc (TUMA).

Aleem Ansary Bato, a faculty member at the King Faisal Center for Islamic and Arabic Studies, served as the program’s host. The summit featured prominent speakers who shared their expertise and insights on various aspects of Islamic education and its role in promoting peace and development.

Judge Aleem Aboali J. Cali, President of the Ulama League of the Philippines, delivered an inspiring message on the importance of integrating Islamic principles with advancements in science and technology. He emphasized the need for these advancements to be reflected in the curriculum of Islamic schools. Judge Cali’s address highlighted the potential for Islamic education to empower future generations with both religious knowledge and scientific understanding.

A key theme of the summit was the unification of curriculum, a point emphasized by Dr. Bashary Latiph. Dr. Latiph spoke about the significance of creating a unified curriculum that would ensure consistency and quality in Islamic education across different schools and institutes. This unified approach, he argued, would strengthen the overall educational system and provide students with a more cohesive learning experience.

Following the presentations, participants engaged in workshops designed to delve deeper into the challenges and opportunities related to curriculum development and unification. These workshops provided a valuable forum for educators and stakeholders to collaborate, share ideas, and contribute to the ongoing process of improving Islamic education. Participants discussed the intricate processes and inherent challenges of curriculum development, underscoring the significant time and effort required to finalize a curriculum draft and successfully implement it within educational institutions. The discussions emphasized the importance of careful planning, collaboration, and ongoing evaluation to ensure the effectiveness of the curriculum in achieving its intended goals.

The Grand Summit served as a valuable platform for educators, community leaders, and stakeholders to discuss critical issues related to Islamic education and its contribution to peacebuilding and development in the region. The event highlighted the commitment of IPDM, MSU Marawi City, and its partners to supporting initiatives that promote quality education and contribute to a more peaceful and prosperous future.

About the author

The institute for peace and development in Mindanao (IPDM) was created by the MSU Board of Regents during its 182nd Meeting on December 7, 2001. The institute assumed the functions of two defunct units: the Muslim Christian Center for Peace Studies and the Muslim Mindanao Development Institute. It is now the central coordinating unit for all existing peace and development programs of the campuses of the University. MSU was established on September 1, 1961 as one of the government responses to the so-called “Mindanao problem.” The problem includes a violent struggle of segments of the Filipino Muslim population to redress long-standing grievances and assert Muslim selfhood and identity in the face of real and imagined threats of cultural and spiritual assimilation by the majority Filipino Christian population. The University was mandated to accelerate the “integration” of the cultural communities in Mindanao into the mainstream body politic and to accelerate the development of its service areas through instruction, research, and extension. In the pursuit of these objectives, the University also seeks to infuse spiritual and moral values, national consciousness and solidarity, and mutual understanding among Filipinos, which are necessary for peaceful coexistence and sustainable development. IPDM was therefore, created with the expectation that it would contribute to the easing of tensions and the promotion of justice and peace between Filipino Muslims and Christian by expanding knowledge, improving understanding and heightening sensitivity in relations between the peoples of Mindanao in particular, and the Philippines in general.
