MSU, Marawi City – The recent episode of “ShuaraMSU,” the radio program partnership between Mindanao State University (MSU) and Radyo Pilipinas 99.7MHz DXSO, shed light on the crucial topic of intellectual property (IP) and the proactive initiatives of MSU’s newly established Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office (ITPO).

During the program, esteemed guest Ms. Aynna Pangandaman emphasized the importance of IP awareness among MSU constituents, particularly the youth. She eloquently explained how young creators, innovators, and idea generators can safeguard their valuable work. A key point of discussion was the distinction between copyright, which protects original works of authorship like literary and artistic creations, and patent, which grants exclusive rights for an invention.

Ms. Pangandaman highlighted the recent outreach of the ITPO to the Municipality of Tugaya, a vibrant hub of Meranao arts and artifacts. This visit underscored the urgent need to educate local artisans on protecting their unique cultural heritage from unauthorized replication and fabrication. The call for securing patents was emphasized as a vital step for creators to claim ownership of their original inventions.

The program also touched upon the exciting landscape of industry innovations currently under examination for patent at MSU. A significant achievement highlighted was the successful trademarking of the iconic Meranao hijab, a testament to the university’s commitment to protecting local cultural assets.

Acknowledging the limited time constraints of a single radio program, Ms. Pangandaman stressed that comprehensive IP awareness requires sustained effort, ideally over a longer period. Nevertheless, she expressed satisfaction that “ShuaraMSU” provided a valuable platform to announce the ongoing work of the ITPO.

Despite being a nascent office under the dedicated leadership of Director Sarifa Sofia Macarambon Ali, the ITPO is actively engaged in implementation, striving to contribute meaningfully to the mission and vision of Mindanao State University.

Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, the program served as an announcement for MSU’s ongoing Technovation Month, inviting everyone to stay informed (“subaybayin”) about the various activities organized to promote technology and innovation within the university.

A significant highlight for the MSU community is that the ITPO, accredited by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) as an Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO), is not charging MSU constituents for the registration of their intellectual property. A minimal fee is applicable only to external clients.

The engaging discussion was expertly hosted by Dr. Aliah P. Cali-Pascan, with insightful co-hosting by Dr. Khayronesah Abbas. This informative “ShuaraMSU” episode served as a crucial step in fostering a culture of intellectual property awareness and protection within MSU and the wider community, aligning with the university’s role in promoting peace and development through innovation.

About the author

The institute for peace and development in Mindanao (IPDM) was created by the MSU Board of Regents during its 182nd Meeting on December 7, 2001. The institute assumed the functions of two defunct units: the Muslim Christian Center for Peace Studies and the Muslim Mindanao Development Institute. It is now the central coordinating unit for all existing peace and development programs of the campuses of the University. MSU was established on September 1, 1961 as one of the government responses to the so-called “Mindanao problem.” The problem includes a violent struggle of segments of the Filipino Muslim population to redress long-standing grievances and assert Muslim selfhood and identity in the face of real and imagined threats of cultural and spiritual assimilation by the majority Filipino Christian population. The University was mandated to accelerate the “integration” of the cultural communities in Mindanao into the mainstream body politic and to accelerate the development of its service areas through instruction, research, and extension. In the pursuit of these objectives, the University also seeks to infuse spiritual and moral values, national consciousness and solidarity, and mutual understanding among Filipinos, which are necessary for peaceful coexistence and sustainable development. IPDM was therefore, created with the expectation that it would contribute to the easing of tensions and the promotion of justice and peace between Filipino Muslims and Christian by expanding knowledge, improving understanding and heightening sensitivity in relations between the peoples of Mindanao in particular, and the Philippines in general.
