College of Health Sciences

MSU Main Campus - Marawi City > College of Health Sciences

The College of Health Sciences was located in the Annex, 1st street, MSU and was created through BOR Resolution No. 1216 s. 1977. It was approved to offer Diploma in Midwifery and Bachelor of Science in Nursing as its initial offerings. However, only the Diploma in Midwifery was immediately offered during that time due to lack of facilities. It was in 1988 when the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program was finally offered after complying with the necessary requirements of the Board of Nursing.

In 1999, the two-year Associate in Health Science Education (AHSE) curriculum was implemented offering preparatory subjects for students to progress to the study of efficient Health Sciences courses in addition to Nursing. In 2006, it was amended and changed to straight Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Currently, the exemplary college is offering Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing major in Nursing Administration. It was in June 2019 when the location of the college was transferred near the main entrance of the university in Brgy. Biaba Damag, Marawi city to cater more learners.

The founding Director of the College was Dr. Agripino Gonzales who was succeeded by late Prof. Cynthia M. Filipinas. When her term had ended, she was succeeded by Dr. Nur-Hannipha B. Derico. After 2 terms, the deanship was turned over to Dr. Mindamora U. Mutin who was again succeeded by Dr. Nur-Hannipha B. Derico whose term ended July 1, 2015 before the leadership was passed on to Dr. Naima D. Mala until last December 21, 2021. By then, the deanship was passed on to Dr. Salmah M. Basher that lasted until March of the same year. During the challenging period, Dr. Hamdoni K. Pangandaman took the responsibility as Officer-In-Charge Dean of CHS while the MSU had the transition period of having new System President. Recently on June 17, 2022, the care and leadership of CHS was passed on to Dr. Athena Jalaliyah B. Derico-Lawi.

The College of Health Sciences has always been known for its academic excellence, dynamism and active community engagement. We are continually and rapidly growing in number and improving our standards as evidenced by consistently placing as one of the top performing nursing institution in the National Nursing Licensure Examinations. The College continues to produce calibrated nurses who are competitive and diverse not only here in the Mindanao and the Philippines but even in international realm.

In an effort to foster stronger partnerships between academia and the energy sector, ๐‘ซ๐’“.๐‘จ๐’•๐’‰๐’†๐’๐’‚ ๐‘ฑ๐’‚๐’๐’‚๐’๐’Š๐’š๐’‚๐’‰ ๐‘ซ๐’†๐’“๐’Š๐’„๐’ ๐‘ณ๐’‚๐’˜๐’Š, Dean of the College of Health Sciences at the Mindanao State University paid a courtesy call to the National Power Corporation (NPC) on February 13, 2025 during the 2nd day of Industrial Nursing Orientation.
The visit is seen as an important step in fostering a positive and professional relationship between the college and the NPC. Moreover, it is a chance to discuss potential partnerships, such as student internships, educational programs and future collaborations tailored to the needs of the energy sector.
During the courtesy call, Dr. Lawi was warmly welcomed by NPC executives, including ๐‘จ๐’•๐’•๐’š. ๐‘ฎ๐’‚๐’Ž๐’‚๐’ ๐‘บ. ๐‘จ๐’๐’Š, the Plant Manager of NPC and ๐‘ด๐’‚โ€™๐’‚๐’Ž ๐‘น๐’๐’’๐’–๐’Š๐’‚๐’‰ ๐‘ณ๐’‚๐’๐’ˆ๐’„๐’, who shared insights into the current and future goals of the corporation.
One of the key outcomes of the courtesy call was the agreement to formalize an internship program (industrial nursing duty) that will allow level IV nursing students from the college to gain hands-on experience at NPC. This initiative will provide students with a deeper understanding of the practical applications of their academic studies, while also contributing fresh perspectives to the corporation.
As the conversation drew to a close, both the Dean and NPC officials expressed optimism about the future of the partnership and their shared commitment of collaboration of the health sector of the academe and in advancing energy solutions that will benefit not only the nation but also the global community.
This courtesy call marks the beginning of a promising collaboration between the College of Health Sciences and the National Power Corporation, reinforcing the importance of fostering industry-academia relationships to tackle the challenges and opportunities of the energy sector.
