MSU CSPEAR conducts sports clinic, conquers Mt. Apo

The Mindanao State University – College of Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation (MSU CSPEAR) conducted a sports clinic at Lake Agco Integrated School, Barangay Ilomavis, Kidapawan City. Also, the team conducted a tree planting activity at Mandangan Trail, Kidapawan City, and conquered Mt. Apo, the highest peak in the Philippines, on February 24-26, 2023. The team was composed of selected MSU CSPEAR faculty members and alumni.

At the sports clinic, basketball, volleyball, and football, were taught to the elementary and high school students of Lake Agco Integrated School using sports equipment from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) which were later donated after the clinic.

The idea of conducting a sports clinic and ascending to the highest mountain in the country was conceptualized by Prof. Henry C. Daut, a retired MSU CSPEAR faculty member, and was endorsed by the college and the university as an extension activity. It gained the support of the MSU alumni community thru cash donations and food and lodging sponsorships at Kabacan and Kidapawan City. With the cooperation of DENR Kidapawan City, the team was permitted to access the Energy Development Corporation (EDC) trail, a non-commercial and private trail to the summit of Mt. Apo.

The activity was titled “SERVE AND CLIMB” and was coined to promote the value of sports to the community, maintain the level of fitness among its participants, and be one with nature thru environmental conservation initiatives.

Faction before blood

Tradition has it that faculty members, staff, and students of CSPEAR are equally distributed in different houses or teams during its Founding Anniversary celebration in a battle for supremacy. This year’s celebration is surely one worth remembering because it is primarily inspired by the faction system in the Divergent Series, a feature film series based on the Divergent novels by the American author Veronica Roth.

Behold, the factions of Abnegation (selfless), Candor (honest), Dauntless (brave), and Erudite intellectual)!
