Darangan Cultural Troupe

The Mindanao State University, in fulfillment of its role as conservator and propagator of the indigenous culture of Mindanao, Sulu and Palawan, organized the Darangan Cultural Troupe in 1966. The troupe has since served as a means or achieving one of the essential objectives of the University as mandated by its Charter – to promote cultural integration.

The Darangan Cultural Troupe, with two decades of tours and performances here and abroad, has come a long way. It has won recognition as one of the country’s premiere cultural troupes.

True to its expressed mission of preserving the indigenous songs, dances instrumental numbers, and rituals of the ethnic groups of the MINSUPALA region, the group under the inspired leadership of its founder, Prof. Henrietta Ele, undertook research on native materials wherever these could be found, and gave the products of their efforts artistic form for performance on stage. The title it earned for this endeavor – “Showcase of Authentic Mindanao and Sulu Culture” – is thus only fitting and proper.

The troupe is prominently featured in documentary films such as “Mindanao Arts and Culture” (National Media Production Center) and “Welcome Aboard the Philippines” (taken by Premier Productions for the in-flight showings of the Philippine Airlines international flights).
