The Researchers and Educators’ Enhancement and Literacy (REEL)
Achieving quality education was found to have slow progress globally. Prioritizing this goal in research and extension endeavors will have a great impact on achieving the overall 2030 Agenda. Enhancement and literacy extension projects that capacitate educators will have a tremendous effect on the economic growth of the nation. Schools whose educators have adequate knowledge and skills will produce graduates who are capable of accelerating progress and development in their workplaces.
The Researchers and Educators' Enhancement and Literacy (REEL) Extension Project to the Mathematics Department of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics has the objective of addressing quality education and decent work and economic growth developmental goals. This action will consequently address the goals of reducing inequality within and among countries thereby making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. The REEL project specifically aims to (1) conduct seminars and training on computer software and languages that are used in research and statistical analysis such as Latex and Python software that are useful in document presentation and computing, respectively, and some open source statistical software for research and analysis; and (2) illustrate applications of these computer software to academic workplaces of the educators and some fundamentals of research and data analysis where these software are useful.
After thorough planning by the extension committee of the Mathematics Department together with the partner institution Mindanao Institute of Technology, Inc. – Marawi (MIT-Marawi), the REEL extension project was implemented from September 20 to 21, 2024 on the school campus of MIT-Marawi. With MIT Marawi teachers and students participating in the activity, the extension project was a success as they were able to appreciate the usefulness of the software introduced by the four speakers. The speakers in the REEL extension project are as follows: Dr. Jezer C. Fernandez for the Python program, Dr. Charles B. Montero for the Latex software, Dr. Emma P. Obalan for the Open Source Statistical Software, and Asst. Prof. Omensalam A. Japar for the Research and Statistics. The participants appreciated the usefulness of the software introduced in the academic workplace and in conducting researches. They were eager to attend the next planned activity which is the hands-on training.
The REEL extension project can go a long way to extend more services to partner institutions to give more enhancement and literacy to educators to be able to extend their knowledge and skills to every learners they handle and appreciate the importance of research in the progress of the society and the nation.
