Narrative Report

First Activity: Health Education Workshop on Hypertension for the Elderly

The inaugural activity of the extension program entitled “Path to Empowerment: Building Sustainable Well-Being in Barangay Papandayan, Marawi City” commenced with a Health Education Workshop on Hypertension for the Elderly, led by Professor Naseha Omar from the College of Health Sciences. The workshop discussed the risks and causes of hypertension, its manifestations, and lifestyle adjustments including dietary choices and physical activity. Professor Omar underscored the significance of medication adherence. Her presentation, meticulously crafted to be engaging and enlightening, facilitated the elderly participants’ comprehension of the subject matter.

Subsequently, an interactive open forum was conducted, fostering an environment where participants were encouraged to pose queries and exchange viewpoints. A question-and-answer session ensued, with commendations and awards granted to participants who actively participated in the discussion and responded accurately. This interactive component injected an enjoyable and motivational aspect into the learning process.

The event garnered a strong turnout of College of Health Sciences faculty members, including Project Leader Ashley A. Bangcola, Co-chair Alibasher Macalnas, and team members Dr. Laarni A. Caorong and Amnah Sharief. Their attendance and contributions were pivotal to the workshop’s success, offering invaluable perspectives and assistance throughout the proceedings.

Second Activity: Healthy Lifestyle Practices Workshop and Exercise Sessions for Elderly with Hypertension

The College of Health Sciences Faculty hosted the second and third activities of the MSU-CHS Extension Program in Barangay Papandayan, Marawi City. Approximately 30 elderly individuals with hypertension attended the event to educate them on maintaining healthy lifestyles and incorporating regular exercise into their daily routines.
The day commenced with an engaging lecture delivered by Prof. Amnah C. Sharief, a faculty member of MSU-CHS. Speaking in the Maranao language, Prof. Sharief provided practical advice on managing hypertension through exercise and maintaining a healthy balanced diet. Her clear and actionable guidance was well-received by the participants, who actively engaged with the material.

Following the lecture, volunteers from CHS Advocates for the Rights of the Elderly (CARE) led a tailored exercise session for the elderly participants. The session was designed to be practical and participatory, allowing attendees to engage in exercises suitable for their condition. Participants were encouraged to integrate these exercises into their daily routines to promote better health. After the exercise session, an interactive Q&A session allowed participants to ask questions and provide feedback. Facilitated by the organizers, this session fostered an inclusive environment where participants felt empowered to share their thoughts and concerns.
