In a significant stride towards sustainability, Mindanao State University has officially launched a Zero Single-Use Plastics policy across its campus, marking a commitment to environmental stewardship and a greener future. This initiative aims to eliminate all single-use plastics from the university premises.
As part of this comprehensive sustainability effort, MSU has introduced a unique campaign encouraging all employees and students to collect their plastic waste, such as candy wrappers, cellophane, etc., and deposit them in plastic bottles. This initiative, dubbed “Plastic Mo, Plus 10 ko” will reward participants with incentives determined by each office for employees and individual classes for students. This creative approach not only promotes active participation but also instills a sense of responsibility among the university community.
The collected plastics will be sent to Holcim where they will be repurposed as raw materials. This partnership highlights the university’s commitment to not only reduce waste but also contribute to a circular economy.
The launch ceremony was a vibrant display of community spirit and dedication, attended by the university’s president Atty. Basari D. Mapupuno, university officials, officials from PENRO, BARMM-MENRE, BARMM-MHSD, Engr. Arvin Clarabal from partner company HOLCIM, and university employees. A central feature of the event was the commitment board, inviting attendees to sign their names and pledge to uphold the campus’s plastic-free initiative. In an energizing show of solidarity, participants joined in a chant that resonated throughout the venue: “MSU malinis! SUP alis!” Accompanying the chant was a gong, symbolizing the university’s collective resolve to eliminate plastic waste.
The launch of the Zero Single-Use Plastics policy stems from BOR Resolution No. 18, S. 2024, underscoring its importance within the university’s operational framework. During the ceremony, the first batch of collected plastics was ceremoniously delivered to HOLCIM marking a tangible step towards achieving the university’s sustainability goals.
With this policy’s implementation, MSU is taking a stand against plastic pollution and inspiring its community to engage in environmentally friendly practices. By fostering a culture of sustainability, the university aims to lead by example, encouraging the community and individuals to follow suit.
As MSU embarks on this journey, it demonstrates that collective action, grounded in clear policies and innovative initiatives, can make a significant impact on our environment. The future looks brighter and greener for MSU as it commits to a sustainable, plastic-free campus.
