Mindanao State University – Main Campus actively participated in the 5th International Conference on Environment and Forest Conservation (ICEFC 2024), held at IPB University in Bogor, Indonesia, from December 6 to 8, 2024. As a key partner in this global initiative, MSU has played a crucial role in shaping discussions and promoting innovative solutions to pressing environmental challenges.

The ICEFC 2024, themed “Forest Conservation in the Anthropocene: Adapting to New Environmental Realities,” provided a platform for researchers, scientists, and policymakers to exchange knowledge and foster collaboration.

With a strong delegation of over 20 faculty members, staff, and students, MSU contributed significantly to the conference’s success.

Led by MSU System President Atty. Basari D. Mapupuno, the delegation highlighted the university’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental conservation. President Atty. Mapupuno emphasized the alignment of the ICEFC with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

MSU’s participation in the conference was marked by several notable achievements. MSU delegates received prestigious Best Presenter Awards in various sessions:

  • Climate Change & Forest Resources Management: Marichu P. Calungsod’s research on “Mining Operations & Post Rehabilitation Practices in SR Metals: Sustainable or Not?”
  • Resources, Utilization, Ethnobiology, & Prospecting: Norhaifah S. Tangorangca’s study on “Ethnomedicinal Survey Phytochemical Screening, and Brine Shrimp Lethality Assay of Commonly Used Medicinal Plants by Maranaos in Saguiran, Lanao del Sur, Philippines”
  • Policy & Education for Conservation: Annabella G. Villarino’s research on “Microplastics in Surface Water & Sediments of the Three Major River Mouths of Iligan City, Philippines”

MSU’s active engagement in the ICEFC 2024 underscores its dedication to addressing global environmental issues. By fostering international collaboration and promoting innovative research, the university continues to make significant contributions to the field of environmental science and conservation.
