Mindanao State University (MSU) Marawi City is hosting a significant series of events throughout March, intertwining the commemoration of historical events with the celebration of women’s contributions, all within the context of Women’s Month and Bangsamoro History Month. This collaborative effort, spearheaded by the Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM), the History Department of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Bangsamoro Commission on Women, and the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) GAD Office, aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of shared history and the vital role of women in society.
The series kicked off with two sessions of the General Education Course 109 (GEC109) focusing on the “Gomburza” martyrs. These sessions, held on Wednesday, March 5th, and Friday, March 7th, provided students and attendees with valuable insights into the historical significance of the three Filipino priests, Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora, whose execution in 1872 played a pivotal role in the Philippine nationalist movement. Adding to the educational experience, these sessions included a film showing, enhancing the understanding of the historical narrative through visual storytelling.
The choice of “Gomburza” as a topic underscores the importance of revisiting pivotal moments in Philippine history, particularly in the context of fostering national identity and understanding the roots of social and political movements. By examining the lives and sacrifices of these historical figures through both lectures and film, participants gained a broader perspective on the struggles and triumphs that have shaped the nation.
This seminar series, including the film showing, is more than just a historical recollection; it is a platform for dialogue and reflection, allowing participants to connect the past with the present. The collaborative nature of the event highlights the commitment of various organizations to promote education and awareness about history and gender equality, particularly during Women’s Month and Bangsamoro History Month.
By combining historical discussions and film screenings with the celebration of women’s contributions, MSU Marawi City is creating a holistic and inclusive learning experience. The series serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of history and social progress, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the contributions of all members of society in shaping a better future.
This event is a significant step towards building a more informed and engaged community, fostering a deeper appreciation for the past while empowering individuals to contribute to a more equitable and just society, all while recognizing the specific historical context of the Bangsamoro region and the importance of women’s roles within it.
