PROF. DR. JAMEL ROMBO CAYAMODIN was born on December 2, 1983 at Brgy. Wawalayan, Marinaut, Marawi City. His is currently holding an academic rank of Professor VI at Mindanao State University Marawi. He served as College Secretary of the MSU–Graduate School Center and as Professor of Islamic law (Shari’ah) in the Postgraduate Program of the Department of Islamic Studies, King Faisal Center for Islamic, Arabic and Asian Studies (KFCIAAS), Mindanao State University (MSU), Marawi City. He used to work as Assistant Professor and was appointed College Secretary at the Institute of Islamic Studies (IIS), University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD), Quezon City from 2014 to 2019. He also taught at the Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (KIRKHS), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) from 2013 to 2014. Dr. Cayamodin has been teaching Islamic law courses especially the Law of Succession to mostly postgraduate students at UP-IIS and MSU-KFCIAAS. He is a practicing Shari’ah Counselor and Shari’ah Bar Reviewer. In 2020, he was appointed by the Supreme Court of the Philippines as Bar Examiner on Succession, Wills/Adjudication and Settlement of Estates during the 16th Shari’ah Bar Examinations. He was also appointed as Bar Examiner on Persons, Family Relations and Property during the 14th Shari’ah Bar Examinations in 2016. In the same year, he completed a Certificate Course on Islam and International Humanitarian Law at Alauddin State Islamic University (UIN), in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, sponsored by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which he completed the same Certificate Course in 2018 at UIN Antasari, Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Dr. Cayamodin obtained his Doctoral degree in Human Science in Sociology and Anthropology specializing political behavior at the KIRKHS, IIUM in 2013. Prior to his studies in IIUM, he undertook Doctor of Public Administration (DPA) and earned units at the National College of Public Administration and Governance (NCPAG), University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD), Quezon City. In 2007, he obtained his Master’s degree in Islamic Studies at UP–Institute of Islamic Studies. While he was studying in UP-IIS, he took and passed the Shari’ah Bar Examinations given by the Supreme Court of the Philippines in 2006. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Islamic Studies major in Islamic law (Shari’ah) at MSU-KFCIAAS, Marawi City in 2005.
In his extension services, Dr. Cayamodin plays multiple roles as adviser, editor, resource person, consultant and member of various technical committees and working groups of both government and non-government institutions, agencies, and organizations. He has been giving a wide range of lectures on Islamic-related topics in various institutions particularly universities and colleges locally and abroad. He is also attached to foreign academic institutions including the International Journal of Nusantara Islam as associate editor. In 2018, one of his articles on Islamic law entitled “The Contemporary Application of the Rules on Al Gharawaini (The Two Bright Stars): Revisiting Umariatān Cases” was concurrently published by the Centre for Contemporary Fiqh and Shari’ah Compliance, Faculty of Islamic Studies, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and the Journal of Islamic Law Review.
Dr. Cayamodin is a consistent scholar during his studies and received several academic recognitions and awards including, among others, the prestigious Malaysian International Scholarship (MIS) awarded by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Malaysia in 2010, and as University and College scholar when he studied at UP Diliman. He was also awarded as one of the country’s Ten Outstanding Muslim Youths (TOMY) by the Center for Moderate Muslims (CMM) in 2007. He is the founding president of different Muslim organizations locally and abroad. Dr. Cayamodin has appeared in various interviews of diverse TV Networks including ABS-CBN, GMA, TV5 and CNN Philippines on Islamic-related discourses as well as current issues concerning the Muslims in the Philippines. He is married to Bai Charina “Khadija” Ramos Mamari–Cayamodin with whom he has four children namely: Hidayah, Muhammad Hasan, Muhammad Yusoph, and Muhammad Muhsin.
