Jhumar Olape Jamis is an Assistant Professor IV at the College of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (CFAS), Mindanao State University (MSU) – Main Campus. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Fisheries Department, Graduate Program Coordinator, and Quality Assurance Coordinator at CFAS. In 2018, he earned his Master of Science in Fisheries, majoring in Aquaculture, from the University of the Philippines Visayas – Miagao Campus.
Before joining MSU-Main Campus, Prof. Jamis worked as an Instructor I at Surigao State College of Technology – Del Carmen Campus, now Surigao del Norte State University – Del Carmen. During his tenure, he was appointed Chairman of the BS Fisheries program and Human Resource Officer of the campus. Additionally, he served as the Chairman of the Biodiversity Assessment, Monitoring, Management, and Conservation Committee of the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) for the Siargao Protected Landscapes and Seascapes (SIPLAS).
His scholarly contributions include his first-authored paper, “Effects of Vinegar and Sodium Acetate on the Growth Performance of Pacific White Shrimp, Penaeus vannamei,” published in 2018 in a Scopus-indexed journal. His most recent publication, co-authored in 2023, is titled “Effects of Biofloc Technology on Water Quality and Growth Performance of Macrobrachium rosenbergii,” also published in a Scopus-indexed journal.
Prof. Jamis has presented his research at various local and international conferences, where he earned several distinctions, including:
• Best Paper Award, Best Virtual Presenter Award, and 2nd Best Abstract Award at the 2020 Multidisciplinary Regional Research Conference held at Agusan del Sur State College of Agriculture and Technology.
• 2nd Best Paper Award and 2nd Best Presenter Award at the 4th Regional Research Conference & 10th In-House Review 2020 at Surigao State College of Technology.
• Best Paper Award and Best Paper Presenter Award at the 3rd Regional Research Conference and 9th In-House Review 2019 in Surigao City.
Additionally, Prof. Jamis is an active associate member of the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) and a regular member of the Asosasyon ng mga Propesyonal sa Pangisdaan ng Pilipinas Inc. (APPP).
He has also been involved as project staff in DOST-PCAARRD and MOST-funded projects, including:
• Effect of Biofloc Technology on Water Quality and Growth Performance of Macrobrachium rosenbergii and Assessment of the Associated Bacterial Communities.
• Application of Biofloc Technology in the Nursery Culture of Giant Freshwater Prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii.
• Hatchery Facility Upgrading for Sustainable Freshwater Fish Production.
Currently, Prof. Jamis leads an extension project titled “Innovations for Sustainable Development of Aquaculture (ISDA).”
