Biography

Leyah Caballejos is a graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Fisheries, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Surigao del Norte State University – Del Carmen Campus. She became a Registered Fisheries Professional in October 2023.

Leyah has accumulated valuable experience in various roles. She recently worked as a Research Consultant for the Institute of Bangsamoro Studies and Mindanao State University (MSU) – Main Campus, focusing on faculty research profiling. Prior to this, she served as a Research Assistant I at the College of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, MSU – Main Campus and was a guest lecturer at her alma mater, teaching fisheries subjects for a semester.

As a student, her work in biodiversity conservation included serving as Field Supervisor for the Sustainable Interventions for Biodiversity, Ocean, and Landscapes (USAID – SIBOL) project, where she managed fish catch monitoring and gear inventory in the Siargao Islands. She also co-facilitated Coastal Zoning and Manage Access + Reserve Design workshops with Rare Philippines Inc. across the municipalities of the Siargao Islands. During the pandemic, she participated as a SEA Camper in the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (USAID – YSEALI), working on the CommuNety Pantry Project addressing ghost fishing effects on oceans and repurposing retrieved nets for farming use.

Her achievements include receiving the Best Thesis Award and being recognized as an Outstanding On-the-Job Trainee. Additionally, her undergraduate thesis earned a Certificate of Copyright Registration from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines.

Her diverse experiences highlight her commitment to supporting sustainable practices and making meaningful contributions to both her field and her community, and she channels this dedication to the next generation through teaching.
