The Mindanao State University (MSU) – Main Campus in Marawi City commemorated the 126th Philippine Independence Day on June 12, 2024, with a flag-raising ceremony at the MSU oval grounds. The event brought together university officials, faculty, staff, student volunteers, and members of the Supreme Student Government (SSG) to celebrate this historic occasion. The ceremony began with a stirring rendition of the Philippine National Anthem, led by the MSU Band and MSU Combo, followed by the BARMM Hymn. Mohammad Faizar Alonto, a faculty member from the King Faisal Center for Islamic, Arabic, and Asian Studies (KFCIAAS), delivered the invocation. Dr. Amerkhan G. Cabaro, the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, led the Panunumpa ng Katapatan sa Watawat ng Pilipinas (Oath of Allegiance to the Philippine Flag), and Judge Arassad M. Macumbal rendered a salute to the flag. The MSU community then delivered a heartfelt performance of the patriotic song, “Pilipinas Kong Mahal.” In his Independence Day message, Atty. Basari D. Mapupuno, the MSU System President, emphasized the importance of unity and perseverance in nation-building, reminding everyone of their role in contributing to the Philippines’ progress. Mapupuno highlighted the need to understand the true meaning of freedom and to work towards a brighter future for the country, urging the community to embrace diversity, channel collective strength, honor heroes, and participate actively in their communities. The ceremony concluded with the MSU community singing the “Himno ng Pamantasan,” followed by a solemn exit parade. This annual flag-raising ceremony served as a significant reminder of the Philippines’ rich history and enduring spirit; a celebration not just of national independence but also of MSU’s commitment to fostering patriotism and civic engagement among its students, faculty, and staff.
