About The ITSO

Republic Act No. 8293 declares that “The State recognizes that an effective intellectual and industrial property system is vital to the development of domestic and creative activity, facilitates transfer of technology, attracts foreign investments, and ensures market access for our products” and created the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) to “promote the use of patent information as a tool for technology development”. The mission of IPOPHL is to “commit to deliver high quality, fast, reliable, effective and efficient services to promote innovation and encourage the creation, utilization, protection of and respect for intellectual property”. One of the flagship initiatives of the Intellectual Property Office or IPOPHL is to establish a network of Innovation and Technology Support Offices (ITSOs) in strategic areas and institutions in the country, like MSU, with high potential for patent activity, usage of patent information and commercialization of innovation in order to demystify and democratize the patent system and support local technological innovations. The Mindanao State University- Main Campus became the Host Institutions operating an ITSO in its premises in 2019. MSU, being a Host Institution, provides a ready pool of science and technical experts with competence to conduct patent search and patent drafting, among other essential competencies and services, as well as assist in patent prosecution, and benefit from the IP capacity-building interventions of IPOPHL and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which will ultimately result in increased IP creation, protection and commercialization in the local community.

A prominent innovation and technology support office in the Bangsamoro Region in enabling, supporting, and protecting innovation through patents, and promoting utilization and commercialization of patented innovation worldwide for the benefit of the Mindanao State University, Bangsamoro Community, and the Philippines.

ITSO is committed to support IP creation by facilitating affordable access to global science and technology information, enable IP protection by promoting domestic and globally competitive innovations, and increase IP utilization by assisting commercialization of globally competitive innovation in the Bangsamoro Region.

Patent Search

We generously provide a patent search service through our patent search software. This service is a rigorous search process of issued patents and published patent applications for inventions that might be considered important “prior art” references when applying for a patent, which may determine whether the invention is novel or not.

Patent searching may take 30-38 days and only costs P10, 000.00.

Patent Drafting

This is the first step to securing your intellectual property rights for your novel idea. The office is committed to easing your way with this stringent process in which you would have to provide a detailed description of your idea. This description must explain why your idea is original and innovative – chronicling all the necessary facets of the invention that make it so.

This process is called patent drafting.

Our patent experts will discuss with you the potential patentability of an invention or technology. The patent expert drafts the patent specifications of a given technology once your invention or technology is novel.

Patent drafting may take 25 days and only costs P25,000.00.

IP Skills Training

We are committed to helping broaden your knowledge and understanding of IP and IP rights. So we offer a two-day training/lectures on IP foundation course at a minimal fee.

We also conduct a 5-day training/workshop on Patent Search and Patent Drafting for a minimal fee.

MSU Marawi's TIC-MIPO received Bronze Cluster Award

The Technology and Innovation Center (TIC) of MSU Marawi, under the leadership of Dir. Sarifa Sofia A. Macarambon-Ali, JD, and Chief of MSU Intellectual Property Office in a concurrent capacity, is truly honored to be a recipient of the Bronze Cluster Award during the recent 2022 ITSO Presidents’ Summit at Sequoia Hotel Manila Bay on March 28, 2023.

With the theme, “ITSO: Hub and Generator of Future-Ready Innovations”, this year’s Presidents’ Summit was an occasion to recognize and award the Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) members who have fulfilled the ITSO 2.0 Clustering deliverables for 2022. The occasion also allowed us to showcase our shared accomplishments with the ITSO network.

Special thanks to the Vice Chancellor for Research, Extension, and Development, PROF. FEMA M. ABAMO, Ph.D. who represented the MSU president in the said event. Of course to our beloved MSU System President ATTY. BASARI D. MAPUPUNO who has been very supportive of our endeavors in making this milestone a realization.

The Technology and Innovation Center (TIC) together with the other sub-offices under its supervision is looking forward to being at par with those globally competitive innovation-driven universities which had been successful in protecting, managing, and commercializing their Intellectual Properties.
